Some years ago I ran into an elderly hasidic gentleman . We began a very simple conversation in front of a store just being nice to each other. As the conversation progressed he paused and asked "Are you Jewish"? I said "Well that depends on who you talk to sir,.. " I then explained that I came from what was then labeled a "mixed marriage",.. as children we were called 'children of assimilation'. I wanted to attend a synagogue as child but couldn't. As I was explaining the rejection we faced growing up,.. he began to cry , and the crying broke out into actual weeping... he asked if he could give me a hug.... I said sure as he was very emotionally broke up... I wondered what was running through his mind that caused such weeping... His adult son came up and said it was time to go their ride had arrived,.. the father/older gentleman rolled up his sleeve to expose a set of numbers.... He then said "I see the pride of who you are in your eyes son, and that would have cost you your life when I was a child,... I don't care what anyone else says , I love you and how more more does HaShem don't ever forget that" With that he was brisked away into a car and drove off.... I must say it was one of the most cherished moments of my life ...
