Hi everyone,
My wife and I have recently left christianity. We have accepted the seven laws and we are wanting to go through a conversion. We have been keeping Sabbath; as best we can, and learning to eat kosher for 6-9 months. Can anyone give us some advice as to what our next step should be. Our goal right now is to move into a Jewish community and begin conversion classes. Anyone who has done this recently, do you have any advice. We have not met with a rabbi yet as there are none in our area. Thanks for any help.

Have you spoken with a Rabbi yet, even if you have not formally met with one who can do the conversion process?

Maybe our conversion thread deserves some information on how to get the ball rolling. For now, you should reach out to someone who is qualified to handle a kosher conversion. A good start is finding someone on this list. Not every rabbi is willing to do a conversion, and not every rabbi is recognized by Israel for performing kosher conversions. By selecting someone on that list, you're ensuring that your conversion will be recognized as kosher. There may be rabbis who are not on that list who do perform 100% kosher conversions. I would recommend that you check their standing with Israel before beginning the process with them. When you do contact a Rabbi, it will be customary for them to try to talk you out of conversion. This is standard procedure, so do be expecting it, and don't be offended when it seems they're trying very hard to dissuade you. If their arguments are making a little too much sense to you, then consider remaining a Noahide.

Mazel tov on your new life! As you mention that you wish to know what the next move is, I want to say that what you are doing right now is right on track. If you are at all near a synagogue, you can contact the rabbi there (which may have to be done several times just to get a hold of them and more just to get an initial interview. Remember that he is considering your potential as a Jew, like you are applying for a job, in a sense, a job as a convert candidate.)
One of the most difficult things for conversion candidates that have left a lifetime of xtianity is purging the xtian way of thinking about the scriptures in general, about your relationship to Hashem and your identity. It may involve some self-esteem issues, because xtianity is good at making people feel unworthy and tainted and unwhole. I HOPE that was never your experience, but if it is, it's likely you will need a couple of years or more of detoxing. So, remain on your observance path, read and discuss it between yourselves and with somebody on line if you don't have Jewish contacts where you live. I applaud you for your courage and your trust in Hashem!!!

A few reading suggestions for a potential convert (you can probably get a few of these through your public library interlibrary loan system): Rabbi Hayim Halevy Donin, "To Be A Jew" and "To Pray As A Jew". Anita Diamant, "Choosing a Jewish Life" and with Howard Cooper, "Living A Jewish Life."
And you will definitely benefit from a copy of Blu Greenberg, "How To Run A Traditional Jewish Household."

I have a copy of Blu Greenberg's book, and it was just wonderful at helping me figure things out.

Tseruyah: you are so right; the first word taught to a Christian is " lord I am not worthy" and " Original sin"
learning the jewish view has helped me stop beating my ex-christian self up....I have never thought of conversation because; I am of the understanding; being a jewish person is; citizen of Israel and I have no plans to move to Israel; I believe, I became a Hebrew when I publicly denounce Jesus.. no classes needed...to think like a Hebrew is reading Tenak... thanks
